House Structure

The importance of good foundations and structures can never be over stressed. According to Vastu, every good thing springs from the right structure of a building, whether for a house or for an office. Unfortunately, most architects don’t recognize Vastu Shastra as a science and completely ignore its principles when constructing buildings. Their ignorance stems from the fact that Vastu is not part of the study material in most architecture schools. However, lately, several universities have recognized the value of applying Vastu for correct orientations and have integrated it in their course curriculum. They strongly believe that the principles laid down by this traditional science of construction holds a lot of reason.

While architecture only deals with the technical aspect of constructing and decorating a building, Vastu Shastra relates to the universe, delivering peace, prosperity, health and happiness to the people.

The picture 1.1 depicts a wrongly constructed house. This kind of construction has the ability to degrade the owner’s prestige, bring in financial problems, lead to health defects, stress, and much more. The problem with this structure is it is built in the north east direction within the Compound wall. Such orientations are not auspicious.
This direction is called Southeast or Agni. A house constructed at this corner (within the compound premises) is inhabitable for humans. It will bring in losses, failures, stress, financial issues, quarrels, health problems, court cases, and much more to the residents.

The Northwest corner is also known as Vayavya or Vayu. This particular direction has the capability to make a man really RICH or very POOR according to the usage. This particular picture shows wrong usage of the northwest direction. A house built like this will lead to mental torture, pain, family problems, disputes, and a life time of unhappiness. Never construct a house such as this.
This is the right kind of construction. It helps the positive energies flow and bring-in prosperity. Residents of such houses will always be happy, successful and abundant. Houses in such directions attract a lot of money.

Things To Keep In Mind When Constructing A House:

• The very first brick of a foundation must be laid in the eastern or northern part of the house.
• When digging the plot one must never start from the west, south or southwest direction.
• The very first room has to be constructed at southwest side.
• Construction of houses on a square or rectangular plot is extremely important and excellent from every aspect. However, if one opts for a rectangular shape, the proportion of the sides must never be more than two ratio one.
• Bigger sized plots are more favorable, as they tend to bring wealth. But they must not contain cleavages, or cracks.
• The house must always be open from every side, this means it must never be contiguous to any other building (two houses must never have a common wall). Also, a house must never be crammed between two houses.
• Plots with triangular shapes are extremely inauspicious.
• A small plot sandwiched between two bigger plots is inauspicious, and the owner of such a plot can undergo a lot of problem.

Living Room

 LOCATION OF THE LIVING ROOM:

• Entrance: The Living room should be near the entrance to the house.  
• North or East facing site: The Living room can be in the North-East. 
• West facing Site: The Living room can be in the North-West.  
• South facing Site: One can have a South-East Living room.  
• A living room can also, be in the Central East, central West, central North or central South of a house.

ARRANGEMENT OF FURNITURE IN THE LIVING ROOM:

• Air Conditioners should be placed on the West walls.  
• TV should be placed such that the viewing is facing East or North. 
• Sofa sets should be placed against the South and West walls or if there is no other choice on the East walls.  
• Avoid a cluttered sofa arrangement. There should be free movement. 
• Avoid furniture near the corners of columns, pillars etc.  
• As a rule, avoid sitting under a beam as it excites your stress zone and disturbs your rational judgment in matters of importance. The balance can be partly restored by concealing beams with the help of a false ceiling.  
• A small water fountain that runs throughout the day, and made of natural materials like copper, stone, glass, clay, stainless steel, bamboo, etc., or a Fish Aquarium is recommended in the Living room preferably in the North-East corner. 
• Fireplaces can be located in the South-East or North-West, since South-East represents Agni (Fire). But it is better to avoid the North-East and South-West corners since North-East represents Water.

PAINTINGS/ARTWORK:

• Paintings on the walls can create positive vibes. 
• But avoid paintings that depict death, violence and negative aspects of life. 
• The following types of paintings can be hung on different walls. 
• The North Wall can have paintings/pictures of water bodies to stimulate the positive aspect of the primary element water.  
• The East wall can have a painting or picture of the rising sun — the beginning of the dawn of a day.  
• The South and West walls can have innovative paintings of a gentle elephant herd, high rise mountains with heavy plant life and similar pictures or paintings that denote strength.

VAASTU COLOURS FOR A LIVING ROOM:

• White, yellow, green, or blue are suitable for a Living room. Avoid red or black.

• This exercise is just a guideline to help you decide, where to position the Living Room in your house plan. Study Room

Study room is place where we all have studied and now our kids are studying. So we always want them to score well in the exams. So here is the formula for success. According to The Hindu Facts vastu, gave so some very beautiful and strongest positions of  study room and related stuff:

LOCATION OF STUDY ROOM:

• West - Study Room should be in the West of the House, as it is believed that Mercury, which increases brain power, Jupiter which increases ambition and curiosity, Moon which helps in the generation of new thoughts and ideas and Venus which helps in the growth of talent have a better effect if the study room is in the West.

SHAPE OF A STUDY ROOM:

• Pyramid Shape- A Study Room used only for studying and not for sleeping can be a pyramidal shaped room.

LOCATION OF WINDOWS AND THE DOOR TO THE STUDY:

• Door to the Study Room can be in the North-East or North.
• Large Windows can be in the East wall.
• Smaller windows can be in the West wall.

POSITION OF FURNITURE AND FIXTURES IN A STUDY ROOM:

• The Study table should face North, East or North-East.

• Right-angle arrangement of Office equipment only: With furniture consisting of a Desk and chair and a file storage on one wall and a Computer table at right angles to the desk on the adjacent wall, the minimum space occupied is 7'8" x 7'6".
• One-wall arrangement of Office equipment only: With furniture consisting of a Desk and chair, a Computer table and file storage on one wall, the minimum space occupied is 9'4" x 6'4".
• A Study cum bedroom: 
• With a single bed and bedside table, study desk/computer table, chair and 2 shutter closet, will be of a minimum size of 8'0" x 7'6"
• With a single bed and bedside table, a dresser/file storage/computer table, study desk with chair, 2 shutter closet, will be of a minimum size of 9'0" x 11'0"

STUDY FUNCTIONS:

• Primary Activites: Studying, Writing, Using the Computer, Storage of files, Reading, Studying, Library.
• Secondary Activities: Used as a Bedroom by a teenager or pre-adolescent child, Storing, Sleeping, Exercising, etc.

• File storage - 1'4" x 2'4"
• Single Bed - 3'0" x 6'10" (Cramped for an adult but suitable for a child)
• Twin Bed - 3'3" x 6'10" or 3'4" x 7'0" ( Okay for an adult)
• Double Bed - 4'6" x 6'10" or 4'6" x 7'0" (Cramped for 2 adults, but okay for 2 children)
• Dresser or Chest of Drawers - 1'6" x 3', 1'10" x 4'0"
• Bedside Table - 1'2" x 1'2", 1'6" x 1'6", 2'0" x 2'0"
• Closet or Wardrobe - Each shutter size is about 1'6" x 7'0". A 2 shutter Wardrobe is the minimum in a single occupancy bedroom and hence is sufficient in a Study which is also used for sleeping.

CLEARANCES:

• At least 2" clearance should be allowed between the wall and the furniture.
• A minimum of 3" should be kept between furniture units.
• A minimum of 3'0" space to push back the chair from the Desk and pulling out the desk drawers.
• A minimum of 2'6" for using and arising from a computer table.
• A minimum of 3'6" in front of the file storage for pulling out drawers.
• A minimum of 4'0" in front of the desk/computer table to allow walking past a person seated at the desk.

• A minimum of 2'0" on one side of bed to allow for movement and making bed.
• At least 1'0" on the least used side of the bed for making the bed. However, in case of single beds, they can be placed against the wall on the least used side.

• A 5'0" turning diameter for a wheelchair.

• Children's Bedroom should be in the West or East side.

SHAPE OF A BEDROOM:

• Square or Rectangle shapes are the most suitable shapes for the bedroom furniture arrangement.

DIRECTION FOR SLEEPING IN A BEDROOM:

• Avoid Head in North - In fact only a dead body is kept with the head in the North and the feet pointing towards the South.
• Head in East: East is the direction of knowledge and enlightenment. Sleeping with the head in the East increases knowledge and increases a liking for spiritualism. For this reason, children should always sleep with their head in the east.
• Head in West: Sleeping with one's head in the West is good for people who do not permanently reside in the house, like guests and married daughters, in their parents' house.
• Head in South. South is the best direction for sleeping. Sleeping with one's head in the South brings happiness and sound sleep.

DOOR AND WINDOWS POSITION IN A BEDROOM:

• Door should open 90 degrees into the bedroom.- A door that cannot open fully will limit the flow of opportunities.
• Door position in East, West or North. Avoid fixing doors in the South-West of a bedroom.
• Main Windows in East or North. And smaller windows in the West is ideal.

POSITION OF A BED:

• Avoid sleeping in alignment with sharp corners. They should be camouflaged with plants or rounded off.
• Avoid sleeping under beams or slanted ceiling.The remedy is to create a false ceiling.
• Keep beds 2" away from walls.
• Avoid bed directly facing the door. But the bed should be placed in a position where the occupants can see anyone coming into the rooms.

ARRANGEMENT OF FURNITURE IN THE BEDROOM:

• Safe in South-West, opening towards North.
• Open space in the North-East.
• Beds should not be shaky. The mattress should provide good support to the body while resting.
• Dressing table should be in the East or North.
• Study table should faceEast, North or North-East.
• Avoid Television. If a TV is kept, it should never be directly in front of the bed as it works as a mirror and generates negative energy. It can be kept to the right or left of the bed at an angle for comfortable viewing from bed.
• Computers should be in the South-East.
• Wardrobes should be in theNorth-West or South-West.
• Keep things that make you happy in front of the Bedroom door.Upon entering, your bedroom, the first thing you see should be something that gives you the feeling of peace and serenity such as a photograph, a favorite quote or even flowers that enhance these positive feelings.
• Keep objects that remind you of unfinished tasks out of the room, or at least out of sight as the bedroom should be a place where you can totally relax.
• Attached Bathroom should be in theEast or South-East.
• Avoid a mirror directly opposite the bed.
• Avoid Religious idols in the Bedroom
• Avoid clutter in the Bedroom as it represents stagnation.
• Avoid storing things under the bed.

• Walls should be light rose, gray, blue, chocolate, dark green etc and not bright colurs.

• First Preference: South-East corner.
• Second Preference: An alternative choice is the North-West corner.
• Avoid: North-East is not preferred in most parts in India.

DOOR POSITION TO THE KITCHEN:

Preference: In the North, East or in the North-East corner of the Kitchen.
                  The door should open in a clockwise direction.

WINDOW LOCATION IN A KITCHEN:

• The ventilators and larger Kitchen windows should be in the East direction.
• The smaller windows can be in the South.
• There should be adequate provision for cross ventilation.

COOKING STOVE POSITION:

• The cooking stove is best placed in the South East.
• One should cook facing East as much as possible.

KITCHEN SINK POSITION:

• The ideal position for the location of the Kitchen sink is in the North East.
• The cooking gas and the washing sink should be kept away from each other.
• Water taps should not be in the corner.
• There should be no leaking taps in the kitchen.

 WATER FILTER LOCATION:

• The water filter and drinking water should be stored in the North East corner.

ELECTRIC APPLIANCES LOCATIONS:

• The Refrigerator can be placed in the North-West or the South-West.
• Electrical appliances like microwave can be put in the South-East corner.
• Exhaust fans in the eastern walls in the South-East corner.

KITCHEN STORAGE:

• No overhead storage cupboards, or shelves above the the cooking stove.
• It is useful to have overhead storage in the rest of the areas.

EATING IN THE KITCHEN:

• According to The hindu Facts Vastu, the Kitchen is the best place to have the daily meals.
• If there is a dining table in the kitchen, it can be in the North West corner.
• Avoid a dining table in the centre of the room.

COLOURS IN THE KITCHEN:

• It is good to have a lot of green colour in the kitchen. For example green granite for flooring or green pictures, as this helps improve the appetite of the family members.
• Other suitable colours are soft pink and orange.
